Investing in a variety of vehicles is a good idea at any age (but most especially when you are young). You should have a variety of investment vehicles, from real estate to paper investments. What Mutual Funds Are

Basically, mutual funds is like a collection of money invested by several people. For example, as an individual you might not be able to gather enough money for a really great (but expensive) investment. What companies do is they look for small investors who will pool their money together so all of them can buy shares of the investment and thereby benefit from the earnings of that fund. This is basically what a mutual fund is. It is different from a stock because in stocks you need to be constantly monitoring it since stocks are usually more volatile than mutual funds.

Types of Funds to Choose From

The good news is there is a variety of mutual fund options that you can choose from, depending on your investment style and approach. If you are somewhat of a “timid” investor, you can go for bond funds. The nature of bond funds is such that the earnings are a bit on the slow side but it is very secure. It is rare to find a bond fund that goes kaput. The second type is called a balanced fund. This is a low- to medium-risk type of fund because it combines reliable funds like a bond fund with funds that see more action, such as stock market and other international investments. This is for people who like to see more movement but are not too thrilled with extreme highs and lows.

And finally, the high risk funds are considered to be the most exciting kind. Usually, they are called strategic funds. Bigger money is required for it and the dividends are quite impressive. However, it is not for the faint hearted since sometimes it can dip really low. Whatever your cup of tea is, mutual funds are great investment vehicles for your portfolio.
